EMERGING TECHNOLOGY IN DENTAL IMPLANT SURGERY: 

FROM STATIC GUIDES TO DYNAMIC NAVIGATION

COURSE OUTLINE: Today, advancements in computer technology are refining implant planning and surgery by improving accuracy, efficiency, and patient safety. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) provides three-dimensional imaging of the orofacial complex in order to facilitate preoperative treatment planning and visualization of anatomy and pathology. Computer software programs can be used to plan implant surgery and are used to enable the fabrication of intraoperative surgical guides. Now, new technology allows for the cbct scans to be used intra-operatively to track the position of the dental drill within the patient during implant surgery. Guided navigation surgery is revolutionizing implant predictability by allowing the preoperative treatment plan to be visualized in 3 dimensions during surgery. Guided navigation uses a highly accurate optical tracking system to relate the position of the patient and the implant drill together, and to project these positions within a cbct scan on a monitor to show the drilling path. This lecture will provide an overview of the benefits of cbct-assisted static and dynamic guided navigational surgery, including CBCT imaging, preoperative treatment planning, surgical guides, and the step-by-step use of computerized intraoperative navigational systems. Specific clinical applications and step-by-step workflow for each technology will be highlighted.

Jill Bashutski is an Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Michigan where she previously served as Acting Director of Graduate Periodontics and Director of Undergraduate Periodontics. 

Dr. Bashutski obtained her dental degree from Western University in London, Ontario. She later obtained her Certificate in Periodontology, Master’s of Science in Dentistry, and Lazzara Fellowship in Advanced Implant Therapy at the University of Michigan. She serves as a senior editorial review board member for Implant Dentistry and the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Research and has authored over 30 articles and 5 book chapters on periodontics and implant dentistry, including a first-authored paper in the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine. 

In 2015, she received the Junior Alumni of Distinction Award from Western University for her contributions to research and teaching. Dr. Bashutski also works in private practice in Regina, SK, Canada, and Ann Arbor, MI, USA.
